The power scale test pattern evaluates how the machine engraves at various power levels and speeds. In light of the Sculpfun S10’s increased power output, we have tailored the pattern to suit this more potent laser module. We excluded the 600mm/min speed setting from the Power Scale, as it resulted in material burn-through at higher power levels. Instead, we introduced a faster speed of 3000mm/min.
The power is incrementally varied from 10% to 100% in 10% steps, with corresponding speeds of 1200, 1800, 2400, and 3000mm/min. We omitted the slow speed/high power shapes, as they tend to cause excessive material charring, rendering them impractical for informative evaluation.
Sculpfun S10 Interval Scale
The interval scale test aims to determine the shape of the laser focus spot, specifically whether it is square or rectangular. The scanning interval gradually increases from 0.1mm to 0.5mm to assess the beam’s characteristics.
To accommodate the Sculpfun S10’s higher power output, we reduced the power levels for this test. The results indicate that the Sculpfun S10 exhibits a relatively balanced beam shape, with engravings in both vertical and horizontal directions appearing reasonably uniform, though not perfect.
A more precise determination of the spot shape will be possible in subsequent tests when engraving on anodized aluminum.

Embarking on a test of engraving a compact 20mm photo while systematically varying the maximum laser power, we delve into the realm of Sculpfun S10’s photo engraving prowess. Such endeavors demand patience, as photos necessitate a meticulous line-by-line scanning process akin to an inkjet printer. Brace yourself for a wait of a few hours when dealing with larger photos.
The Sculpfun S10 shines in this endeavor, effortlessly producing stunning results. Renowned for its proficiency in photo engravings, the Sculpfun series stands unmatched. Its closest rival, the Sculpfun S9, boasts even finer engraving details owing to an exceptionally minute focus spot.
Vector Image Engraving When it comes to vector images, the engraving process gains celerity as the laser head seamlessly follows the intricate lines. However, the technique restricts the creation of grayscale images.
In our comprehensive test, we incorporated an endearing portrayal of a Tit bird nestled in the upper-right corner of the sample piece. Remarkably, the bird engraving materialized within a matter of minutes. By employing the software’s capabilities, closed shapes can be filled with patterns, achieved here through a meticulous 0.1mm step scanning. To expedite large-scale engravings, one may opt to increase the step size to 1mm or more, facilitating a faster raster or grid formation within the black areas. However, this subject warrants a dedicated exploration on a separate occasion.

Displayed below, the engraved test pattern has been meticulously arranged to evaluate the focus dot size in different directions, while also assessing the influence of speed. Subsequently, we shall delve into a detailed examination of each constituent part of the test pattern.

Of paramount importance is the interval scale, affording us a means to approximate the laser dot size through vertical and horizontal scanning with varying interval steps. Our findings reveal the Sculpfun S10 laser module’s distinctive rectangular laser dot, leading to discernible dissimilarities between horizontal (X-axis) and vertical (Y-axis) scanning patterns, accentuating the rectangular nature of the laser beam spot rather than a square configuration.
The text engraving, performed at a rapid pace of 600 mm/s considering the minute movements, does bear some imperfections with visible vibrations concentrated in the corners, a common occurrence with most machines. Such hindrances can be circumvented by adjusting the acceleration and speed settings, effortlessly achieved thanks to the improved x-axis linear rail. Notably, the laser head attains unprecedented stability when engraving diminutive text, exhibiting minimal vibrations, even with minuscule one-millimeter tall lettering!
Further examination through a digital microscope unveils fascinating insights. Captured by an Andonstar AD407 digital microscope, the images convey the Sculpfun S10 laser module’s dot shape, measuring approximately 0.1 by 0.18 millimeters. Subsequent tests involving varying text sizes demonstrate the machine’s remarkable prowess, effortlessly rendering one-millimeter text highly legible. The Sculpfun S10’s mechanical stability outshines its competitors, even when confronted with intricate engraving tasks.

The subsequent image showcases two sets of squares, one nested within the other on the right side. The inner square was engraved at 1000mm/min, while the outer square adhered to 100mm/min. A discerning eye can identify minimal wobbling at higher speeds, a testament to the machine’s exemplary mechanical design, with speed leaving no discernible impact on the brightness of the engraved pattern.
Laser Focus Distance Test By conducting this evaluation, we aim to explore the behavior of the laser dot as it delves deeper into the material. A laser’s ability to maintain focus at varying depths is an essential factor governing the thickness of materials it can effectively cut.
Our methodology involves lowering the test board by 3mm for each square without adjusting the laser head’s focus. The 0mm square signifies an optimal focus configuration using an aluminum block. The 3mm square is engraved with the test piece positioned 3mm lower than the optimal focus point. The results reveal the dot’s size at a depth of 3mm within the material being cut, reflecting a similar principle for greater distances.
Notably, the Sculpfun S10 outperforms the majority of machines, including the Atomstack A10 Pro (X7 Pro), the xTool D1 10W, and the Neje Master 2S Plus. Unquestionably, the Sculpfun S9 reigns supreme in this category. Maintaining a small laser spot size over distance enables laser engravers to cut through thicker materials.

Leveraging the thickening effect can prove advantageous when engraving larger objects with low detail. By deliberately setting the laser out of focus, the resulting beam expands, expediting the engraving process as the distance between engraved lines increases.
Acrylic Engraving and Cutting A brief evaluation was conducted on 3mm thick black acrylic (plexiglass) at a speed of 600mm/min, both with and without the aid of air assist. The Sculpfun S10 excelled in both engraving and cutting endeavors, delivering impeccable results with pristine edges. Notably, the use of air assist enhances contrast and legibility in engravings.

Conversely, employing air assist considerably improved the performance, achieving a clean cut through the material in a mere 25 passes.
Plywood Cutting Test Our examination encompassed three different speeds, targeting 3mm, 6mm, and 10mm thick poplar plywood for cutting purposes. The test encompassed scanning in both horizontal (X-axis) and vertical (Y-axis) directions, as the cutting performance differs due to the rectangular shape of the laser dot.
Furthermore, we conducted the test with and without an air assist pump to gauge the disparities introduced by air assist.

Hardwood Cutting Test This examination aims to demonstrate the Sculpfun S10’s proficiency in cutting harder woods at a speed of 600mm/min. Initially, we attempted to cut 4mm pine wood, a relatively soft material. Remarkably, the Sculpfun S10 achieved this feat in just three passes.
We proceeded to tackle 3mm and 5mm thick beech wood, known for its increased hardness and density. The Sculpfun S10 exhibited no difficulty in cutting through these challenging materials, completing the task in three passes for 3mm thickness and four passes for 5mm thickness.
Intriguingly, when cutting 5mm thick oak wood, we observed that engravings appeared cleaner without the use of air assist, a departure from the behavior exhibited in poplar plywood. Therefore, conducting tests to determine the optimal configuration for a given job is recommended.
